Dave was first associated with the club in 1962 when the club was based at the Patutahi Golf Club. He played for one season before returning to Wellington to work.

A few years later he returned to Gisborne and was playing in his work team (the Water-siders) when Rees Johnston was coaching for Ngatapa. Rees had the basis of a good team but was short of a couple of positions, so he approached Dave in 1969 and thus began Dave's long association with the club.

Dave was the player rep on the committee from 1971 to 1973 then became a full committee member from 1974 to 1995. (In the early days meetings were held at the homes of Peter Dods and Paddy Wanklyn because there was only a tin shed at the rugby grounds).

During this time he was a coach from 1975 to 1977, club captain 1983/84 and president from 1989 to 1994. He was made a life member in 1995.
